  • Research Operations Lead - Project Baseline

    Strategic operations for one of the most ambitious research studies undertaken by the life sciences division of Google[x]: Project Baseline - a research collaboration between Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences), Stanford, and Duke to understand risk factors for disease development, and to inform the development of new therapeutics, diagnostics, and digital interventions capable of preventing and detecting disease earlier on. Additional research improvement efforts for the Department of Medicine: ► Proposed survey instrument to assess research participants' perceptions of their experiences in clinical research; developed implementation and communication plans for department-wide distribution of survey to clinical research participants. ► Championed strategic efforts to measure job satisfaction among clinical research staff in the Department of Medicine. ► Created user flow diagrams and training materials for a new Clinical Trial Management System being rolled out across the School of Medicine.

  • Clinical Trial Manager for the Stress and Health Research Program (San Francisco VA Medical Center)

    Consulted on experiment design and managed the development of the first, holistic randomized controlled trial at the San Francisco VA Medical Center designed to gather preliminary data on whether Integrative Exercise is effective for the treatment of combat-related Posttraumatic Stress (PTS) and sleep disturbances. ► Collaborated with scientists, clinicians, veterans, exercise instructors and active-duty service members to develop a novel exercise protocol integrating the best elements of aerobics, strength training, and mindfulness-based breathing techniques. ► Created and managed all aspects of study design and implementation, including preparation and submission of all study documents requiring IRB and VA regulatory approval (study protocol, informed consent documents, recruitment screener, and marketing materials). ► Designed questionnaires and analyzed data to assess Veterans’ perceptions of the feasibility and acceptability of the exercise intervention. ► Developed and managed study budget, staffing/resource plans, and tracking systems to ensure study timelines, costs, and quality metrics were met; helped prepare new research grant applications. ► Formally supervised and trained a team of 8 research employees, including hiring, preparing training materials/SOPs, overseeing project work, ensuring adherence to study enrollment goals, and evaluating employee performance.

  • Research Project Manager - Chemical Dependency Outcomes Monitoring System

    Oversaw regional initiative to implement a Chemical Dependency Outcomes Monitoring System (CD OMS) in Kaiser Chemical Dependency clinics. ► Managed the development and implementation of an automated system that measures patient outcomes, gauges program performance, and assesses the effects of new therapeutic interventions. ► Conducted qualitative interviews with Kaiser providers and patients in combination with first-hand observation at the clinics to fully understand the broader, cultural context of treating patients with substance use disorders. ► Co-designed 50-item computer-based assessment that involved sensitive psychosocial issues such as substance use, psychiatric conditions, and behavioral risk factors. ► Trained clinicians on the system, gathered feasibility and adoptability feedback, recommended iterative refinements to the system, supervised software developers and research staff to implement changes, and documented implementation scope for regional roll-out. ► Created executive presentations for KPNC Mental Health Services leadership on the feasibility of implementing an outcomes monitoring system, about its utility and predictive ability, as well as its effectiveness in isolating epidemiological characteristics of the CD patient population at Kaiser. ► Collaborated with CD Department Chiefs, Best Practices Steering Committee, and the CD Quality Improvement Committee to integrate CD OMS system into clinical policies. ► Drafted implementation plan for 24 Northern California clinics, covering policy changes, defining roles and responsibilities, clinician trainings, and reporting criteria.

  • Research Project Manager - ADVISe (Alcohol Drinking as a Vital Sign) Study

    2009 - 2012

    Primary project management for a large, cluster randomized implementation trial at Kaiser: contributing to a NIH-sponsored study examining the most efficient way to provide alcohol screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment in adult primary care at Kaiser (SBIRT). ► Worked collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders: department chiefs, medical directors, primary care physicians, clinicians, nurses, and other researchers, etc... to implement SBIRT at 8 KPNC medical centers. ► Conducted semi-structured interviews with physicians and staff to identify barriers and facilitative factors related to delivering alcohol screening and brief intervention in primary care. ► Co-created Primary Care online survey to understand organizational factors influencing SBIRT adoption as deemed by providers, chiefs, and administrators in internal medicine. ► Coordinated 70+ trainings (~800 primary care providers) across Northern California facilities.
