My institutional banking experience seems so far in the past as to barely seem relevant, yet I find that I draw on it every day. I worked in NYC for 12 years starting humbly in the late 1980s for the Bowery Savings Bank selling mortgages, then for a finance subsidiary of AIG, where I got the bug for international finance. While at this small group I started getting my business degree at night. In 1991, MBA in hand I went to Chemical Bank, in the Latin American group run by Heidi Miller. But after training with Jimmy Lee's syndications group I joined what was now the newly merged Emerging Markets group. Chemical became Chase, where we all joined Chase Securities. I moved to UBS, still in Emerging Markets, and after another merger found myself working for Warburg Dillon Read. I then went off on my own for a year or so working as a consultant for an old client before moving to Florida, where I took on investing responsibilities for my extended family, a job I continue to carry out. But I found my home investing directly in early stage companies beginning in 2010. Directly and through different funds and platforms I’ve backed over 500 companies. When I’m not mentoring ventures I’m working at Bacchus Venture Capital, a new AngelList syndicate that I’ve founded along with 6 other mentors, and Beresford Ventures, a micro VC fund based in Florida.
